Roman Forum, Mamertine Prison, and Julius Caesar follow the same schedule and are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the year. The Palatine Hill is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. between April and August and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between September and March.

Best Time to Visit the Colosseum 

The best time to visit the Colosseum is early morning, at 8:30 a.m., as soon as it opens for the day, or during the late afternoon, after 3 p.m. During these hours, the crowd is less and the temperature is favorable, making it a comfortable time to explore the area and the upper tiers with ease. The morning light and the evening golden hours are also the best time for photography.

We recommend you avoid visiting the Colosseum between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. This is the busiest and the hottest hours. You can expect huge crowds, long waiting times, and packed sites during these hours. 

Guests who plan to visit from April to September can also take advantage of the extended opening hours until 7:30 p.m. A night tour of the Colosseum is relatively crowd-free and also a unique way of visiting the amphitheater. 

Best Time of the Week to Visit Colosseum: 

It is best to visit Colosseum on weekdays and steer clear of weekends to avoid crowds. 

Tuesday to Thursday are typically the least busy and ideal days for a visit to the Colosseum. There usually aren’t as many visitors on these days meaning you will spend less time in queues and have a relaxed experience. 

Visiting early in the morning on weekdays is often the best way to avoid crowds and enjoy a calm tour of the Colosseum. 

Best Months of the Year to Visit the Colosseum: 

The ideal months to visit the Colosseum would be from April and May and from September to November. The weather is cool and comfortable and the crowd is also less.

Late December and early January and June to August are the periods that should be avoided due to the holiday season as well as the extreme temperatures.   

Night Visit at the Colosseum
